The precarious balance between dark and light forces are a motif in Tolkien's writings. Even forces for good can be corrupted. Bilbo constantly carries the weight of temptation for the ring. Succumbing to this temptation would turn him to evil or at the very least a Gollum- like creature. Greed and desire are always ready to take root in most of Middle Earth's population.
