Bilbo has many skills that emerge during his experience in the forest. What are some of them and how do they help him

Bilbo's journey reveals many "hidden" skills. He becomes known as the thief; he's an ingenuous problem solver; an excellent mediator, and he is forced to find his way out of many dangers by his wits. I acknowledge that at a certain point, his possession of the ring does help immensely, as does the consistent aid he receives from Gandalf.
