In the poem, Gorman makes note of the country's recent darkness and trials, marking the fact that the country has only just endured “a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it, would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy”, a force that “nearly succeeded” in its purpose. Gorman does not, however, end without commending America’s resilience and “the light that is always there, if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.”
