One, the observable, external life, grew every day more horrible. The other the life we lived with God, grew daily better, truth upon truth, glory upon glory.
"Life in Ravensbruck went on two different levels," said Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch Christian who survived the Nazi concentration camp Ravensbruck during World War II. This meant she had two different ways to experience life at camp.
The first level was the physical level, consisting of harsh conditions, forced labor, and brutality of the guards. It was a level of deprivation, suffering, and death that was all too real for the prisoners.
The second level was spiritual, where prisoners could find hope, courage and even joy in the midst of suffering.
For example, Corrie and her sister Betsy were able to create a small community of faith and support among their fellow inmates and they were fueled by their belief in God's love and mercy.
Corrie's statement that "life in Ravensbrück took place on two different levels" highlights the contrast between the physical reality of the camp and the spiritual reality that prisoners are able to create for themselves.
