In the book, ‘The Hate U Give’, Homes,shops and restaurants are all watched over by portraits of Dr. King, Malcolm X and Huey Newton. Who are these men, what did they do, and what does that tell us about the neighbourhood of Garden Heights?

Dr. King was a minister and civil rights leader.

Malcolm X was a Muslim and human rights activist. He founded the Muslim Mosque Inc.

Huey Newton was a political activist and communist.

All three of these men were assassinated.

In looking at these men, all similar, and yet very different..... we can see that the Garden Heights community embraced its African American leaders in all forms.
