In Chapter 2, Starr tells us that when she was twelve, her parents gave her “the talk”. The "talk" involved instructions about how to respond to a police officer. Her parents told her to keep her hands visible, be respectful, and not to make any sudden moves. The chapter then moves onto Khalil's being pulled over by the police, frisked, and subsequently shot.... Starr is a witness to the shooting. When she runs to Kahlil, the officer commands her to put her hands up.... all while holding his gun on her.
