Why is Gatsby willing to replace a torn dress of one of his partygoers?

According to the girls, Gatsby may have replaced the dress because he doesn't want any trouble for anyone.

“There’s something funny about a fellow that’ll do a thing like that,” said the other girl eagerly. “He doesn’t want any trouble with anybody.”
