Why does Nick call Tom and Daisy "careless people"?

He calls them careless because they think of no one but themselves; they're selfish. Tom and Daisy prove this by their reckless actions..... and their ability to pull away so that those actions aren't tarnished. Rather than own up to their mistakes, Tom and Daisy simply leave town for awhile.
