why does gatsby call nick old sport?

Gatsby is attempting to pass himself off as a former student of Oxford. He takes on the speech and affectations of the well educated and monied to impress..... Gatsby does, however, like Nick immensely...... and the name is meant to be affectionate (as in friend).
