Daisy didn't enjoy the party because of the gossip about Gatsby. She wasn't crazy about the accusation that he was a bootlegger, and she is even less happy about Gatsby's demands that she tell Tom that she never loved him.

Who is this Gatsby anyhow?” demanded Tom suddenly. “Some big bootlegger?”

He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: “I never loved you.” After she had obliterated four years with that sentence they could decide upon the more practical measures to be taken.
