In Chapter Six, we learn that James Gatz was born to an impoverished farmer in North Dakota. We also learn that he legally changed his name to Jay Gatsby at the age of seventeen. Gatsby attended St Olaf's for two weeks. He later went to work for Dan Cody who became his mentor.
