Why is the novel entitled The Great Gatsby? He did have his flaws as well as many strengths. List those, compare, and comment on the significance of the title and Nick’s altering attitude toward him. Re-read the beginning of the book to make some significant claims. What made Gatsby great?

The title of the novel refers to Gatsby's capacity and ambition, which afforded him everything he worked for. He was "great" in that he was a man who had nothing, and yet, he gained everything. Unfortunately, he could not attain the one thing he really wanted..... Daisy's love.
