The Great Gatsby

At the end of the novel, only Tom and Daisy remain together, unscathed by the novels many tragedies and disappointments. Knowing what you do about these two characters, why do things turn out this way? What allows Tom and Daisy to escape much of the pain of what they contributed to? Tom and Daisy, as Nick described them..... are selfish. They think only of themselves, and they will do anything to safeguard what belongs to them. Unfortunately, what they have are things..... they really have nothing.

When Nick meets Tom, Tom admits to his part in Gatsby's death.... in George's death. He shows no remorse and is even happy that Gatsby was killed. Nick was appalled, but he wasn't surprised.
