The Great Gatsby
In chapter 1 What do you learn about toms attitude concerning race? How does Daisy react to this aspect of his personality?
Explain.
Explain.
Tom Buchanan's racism is evident from the very beginning of the novel when he advises that "it's up to us (white people), who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things." Tom believes in racial eugenics to maintain superior white populations over indigenous populations. The nonsense that spews out of his mouth is a reflection on his own insecurities and general ignorance about other people. The racism is just another way that he validates his own sorry existence. This story is all about the filthy rich of East Egg. Racism seems to give them some sort of justifications for their vapid lifestyles. Daisy does not seemto have any real convictions that she would defend.
