In their attempts to collect money, Jeanette's mother takes up teaching positions (temporarily); the children begin "dumpster diving" to find food and other resources; Jeanette's father hustles money at pool halls, and he also invents as device called “The Prospector,” a machine that intended to dig and sort out gold nuggets found in the yard.
