What is the meaning of the memory of the sled?

What does the Author mean why does she put that first. How does getting cold have to do with hiding from those planes. Why does he make himself cold to hide from the planes. What wisdom does it give Jonas.

I’m not sure about all your questions. I can comment on the sled. The sled, the first memory Jonas receives from the Giver: it symbolizes the journey Jonas takes and is going to end up taking. The red colour represents a new passion and feelings that Jonas has not felt yet. Like the airplanes at the beginning of the story, the sled represents both exhilaration and fear.
