it is obvious, from jonas's conversation with lily, that animals are not longer a part of their community. why do you think animals were removed from their society? what part do animals play in your life?

Animals offer an experience that the Elders cannot control. Animals cannot be controlled in the same sense humans are. Animals offer a sense of nature that the Elders want to insulate people from. Pets offer an unconditional love that the Elders cannot dictate.
