Hannah is the titular protagonist of The German Girl. Before the war, she lived in Berlin as a wealthy, pampered heiress, favorite pastimes being having tea with her mother in a luxurious hotel and spending afternoons with her best friend Leo. However, once the Nazis invade Germany, her charmed life falls apart. With her family and Leo, whom she has made a pact with, she must escape Berlin by ship. But their plans are foiled.Anna Rosen is Hannah's great-grandniece. When she receives a mysterious letter from the estranged Hannah, she travels to Havana to meet her and there, listens to Hannah's tale. Anna seems like a sympathetic individual.
