What was awfully funny about words written in book found by Tommy?

Tommy finds his sister's ignorance and disbelief to be enormously funny, as she becomes enthralled by what school used to be like and is unable to imagine the concept. His laughter is born in what becomes the "younger" brother's feeling of superiority..... he knows something that she doesn't.
