When Leeza's mother reveals Reef's identity, Reef immediately turns and runs. He has no other way to cope with the guilt, ot the anger he sees in her mother's eyes. He ran down the stairs, he physically ran into people, and he ran back to the home.... to share his story with the others. Then he wept.

We are not given a detailed description of Leeza's response in this chapter, she never quite gets back the shock of her mother's words.

The scene is very effective, the author draws you in.... we worry for Reef, and we feel his pain and panic. We can also envision the anger, stature, and look on Leeza's mother's face simply by reading her words.

The First Stone

Reef clearly has changed since the outset of the novel. How does this chapter show those changes?
