Anne's fountain pen allows her to recall many memories from growing up. She received the pen when she was nine, she used it at home, she used it at school. It marked life changes and coming of age. In the last year of her life, Anne used the pen to record her thoughts, and in the end, it was bruned in the fire. Anne notes, "I'm left with one consolation, small though it may be: my fountain pen was cremated, just as I would like to be someday!", foreshadowing her death.
