As Anne was a teenager, the measures taken to protect her life were implemented by her parents. The isolated themselves in the secret annex, their only outside communication with Mr. Frank's most trusted employees. These people kept the Franks and other members of the annex up on the new, and more importantly, regularly stocked their supplies.
In the early chapter, we learn about many of the changes endured by the the Jews before the family went into hiding. Jews were no longer able to ride on trams, they are segregated on the ferry, Mr. Frank's business is barely staying afloat, as Jews were not allowed to participate in that type of business.
