What happened when Hannah and Gitl tried to find food?

Hannah and Gitl ask a soldier where they can find food. The soldier tells them they'll have to wait.... that they'll get food eventually. Gitl tells him a story, to which the soldier responds that the Jews have nothing important to say, after which, he points to the smokestacks and notes it's "Jewish smoke".
