Tchervyakov is not an important man, but he is conscientious. When in the wrong, Tchervyakov believes that he should apologize and excuse his behavior, which in this case is sneezong and spitting upon a man of importance. The clerk is frightened of reprimand.

Brizzhalov, however, is an important man and a government official. He see himself as superior, and he has no wish to be bothered about things that he considers trivial. He is annoyed by Tchervyakov's numerous apologies, and in the end, believes the young man is poking fun at him. Brizzhalov is unable to see how the event affected the younger man, or how it has embarrassed him..... he only looks to himself.
