why are Danforth and Hathorne so unwilling to rethink their position?

Danforth and Hawthorne need the witch trials to validate their own existence. Without suspicion, accusations and finally indictments these two would be out of a job and out of the power they so crave.

They also don't want to admit they made mistakes and sentenced others to death under false pretences.
