What is the danger of being a self-serving person? When is it appropriate to protect yourself at the expense of others?

I suppose this depends on what one values. Certainly Abigail used her self-serving disposition to turn Salem into a chaotic mess. Her lies and deceit spread like a virus to others who found they must protect themselves as well. People began to blame others for imaginary sins in order to protect themselves and settle old petty conflicts.
