Why did the Count refuse to eat anything at Morcef's party?

The Count always refused to eat with suspect enemies. The Countess de Morcerf (Mercédès) would pick grapes and offer them to the Count but refused. He also refused tasty food brought by Mercedes. I think the Count feared the food might have been tampered with.
