Theme - Rebirth and renewal

Transformation or "rebirth" is certainly a theme in this novel. Edmond emerges from his prison a changed man with a new identity. He changes everything about himself from his clothing to his personality to his name. Edmond is able to osculate between himself and the Count when he needs to. Edmond also becomes a transformer, changing the lives of the people around him. Edmond, for example, wants to destroy the lives of the people who betrayed him.
