Did God give Edmond a justice, or did edmond win his own justice?

The themes of the film are pretty close to the book. Your question depends on how you view the novel. Certainly Edmond lucked out by having Abbe Faria save him from suicide and point him in the direction of a massive fortune. Was that really luck or divine providence?
