“Well, you see we’re different from them because they can’t make thought shapes, and when people are different, ordinary people are afraid of them” (144). Analyze this quotation in terms of character and theme. What is David saying about the Waknuk society in this quotation?

In essence, David is critiquing the society's intolerance of differences and unique abilities. David, himself, is different, and as a result, he is isolated from society because of his differences. The Waknuk society is portrayed as close-minded.... even fearful of things they themselves deem different.
