What is the Irgun? Why does Reuven's father have mixed feelings about its activities?

Irgun is a Zionist rebel group, Reuven's father does not agree with their methods of retaliation or violence. Example: the haning of two innicent soldiers in reliation for the hanging of three Irgunists.
