This is an opinion question. I like Reb's character, although I wish he could find it within himself to be a father figure for Danny instead of a tyrant. As readers, we cannot judge his past experiences. It also isn't our place to judge or criticize his religion. Reb is a good man, who is doing his best to embrace his religion and its roots, as well as to pass it down to the next generation. I admire him for standing fast in a world that made it all so difficult.
