What significance is there to the movie plots mentioned throughout the book?

I'm not sure about movie plots but movies seems to be a minor motif throughout the novel. His brother is a screen writer in Hollywood which, for "prostituting his talent" , Holden despises. I would guess he finds screenplays phony. Check out this link,
