    Why is Holden so concerned about whether Jane still keeps her kings in the back row?

    At first this might seem like an odd obsession for Holden, but on closer examination it relates to his concern about Stradlater taking advantage of Jane, or even simply corrupting her. Keeping one's kings in the back row is a defensive, conservative strategy for a checkers player. Holden is hoping that Jane still keeps her defenses up, whether she can take care of herself if Stradlater tries anything with her.
