The Castle of Otranto
What is the significance of the Alfonso Statue bleeding from its nose?
When Manfred tells Jerome that Fredric has consented to marry Matilda in exchange for Isabella's hand, it causes the statue of Alfonso to bleed 3 drops of blood from its nose. I've heard of stautes of saints weeping blood, so it's interesting that Walpole chooses to have a statue that is not a saint bleed (especially since the figure of St. Nicholas is present) and specficially bleed from the nose 3 drops of blood. It feels like there is some kind of significance to those three characteristics (1. statue is not a saint, 2. from nose, 3. three drops of blood) and I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts about that?
