His early life was that of a relatively privileged son of a family connected with the interaction that took place on the docks in London. That and his work for wealthy families, combined with service in a number of government posts, allowed him to observe the manners of the upper class as well as to observe members of all classes of people. He was a prolific writer and he is considered by many to be the Father of English poetry.
