why does bruno fail to tell lieutent kotler that he gave shmeul the chicken?
when shmeul comes to bruno's house to eat food.

Bruno doesn't admit to giving Shmuel food because he is afraid of Lt. Kotler. Kotler may also report the incident to his parents, and Bruno's father would not be happy about it. His denial causes him tremendous guilt.
