“Well you've been brought here against your will, just like I have. If you ask me, we're all in the same boat. And it's leaking.”
Bruno is speaking with Maria the housemaid. Bruno is using the metaphor of a sinking boat to the feeling he gets about "Out With" and his surroundings. Bruno is a sensitive boy and, although he does not yet comprehend how true his statement is to the war in general, he feels it within himself.
