Why do you think it took Bruno "several weeks" after arriving at out-with to decide that he'd better start entertaining himself ?

I think Bruno expected to continue to see his friends, in fact we learn in the text that Bruno believed that with no prospective visits from his friends on the agenda he "decided that he'd better start to find some way to entertain himself or he would slowly go mad."
