Kotler is very conflicted about his father. He tries to hide the fact that his father left Germany and is considered a traitor by the Nazis. Kotler feels his father's beliefs could reflect badly on him. Kotler is angry and resentful but we wonder if there might also be sadness for his father that Kotler hides.
