explain how the director created a sense of intimacy in a scene

I saw the movie version of this quite a while ago. I do remember the fence separating the two boys. Their meetings were very sweet and intimate. Sometimes the director used wide angle shots and sometimes close ups. These scenes were very simple and beautiful.
