Chapter Four starts out with a description of the view from Bruno's window. He sees boys, men, and elderly men living together. There are no women. Gretel is curious as to why there aren't any women.

Under Bruno's window, there is a flower garden. Beyond that is a paved area with a bench. Further away, Bruno and Gretel see a wire fence that extends farther than they can see. On the other side of the fence there is no grass or greenery, only small shelters. The children also see smoke stacks in the distance.
