Bruno and Gretl's mother is "a tall woman with long red hair", who quietly resents having to move her family to Out-With. She tends to act differently depending on which family member she is with. With Bruno she seems supportive of father and oblivious to exactly what father does. When Bruno eavesdrops on his mother, she is resentful of her husband and the move they are making from their comfortable house in Berlin to the death camp.
