What did Hans do after the war that linked him to Max? How many years later did they meet

After the war, Hans went to visit Max's family in order to tell them that Erik saved his life during the war. I believe that Hans had seen Max when he was around the age of three (Max's father died when he was two). The two men met again when Max showed up at Hans' door..... approximately twenty years later.
