What choices do Liesel and Rudy make about groups they will belong to? What groups do they belong to without choice? What are the consequences?

There is the street group that they belong to. The steal food but this is mostly out of hunger and a desire to rebel against the war in some small way. The Hitler Youth comes calling which both Rudy and Liesel loath. They cannot however openly refuse or they will bring hardship onto those they love.
