Stereotyping

A stereotype is an oversimplified image of a group of people, usually held in common by some part of society. How can stereotypes be harmful? What do you think people can do to overcome stereotyping? Have you noticed any examples of stereotyping in your community or in the media?

This is a short answer space but I can make a general comment. Stereotypes simplify and even objectify a group of people into simple and often dirrogatory terms. Consider Matt Groening's iconic show The Simpsons. Almost every character is a stereotype but the humor comes from the fact that the audience knows the streotypes are not true: the show then becomes clever satire. Sterotyping is everywhere. Consider politics in the United States today. Using racial Sterotypes to garner support has become common.
