This tells us that the German people felt the politics and social conditions of the time. Some Germans rejected Nazi politics and some accepted them. Many simply kept quiet because of fear. Some joined the underground, at great peril to themselves and family, to fight the Nazis. People like Hans resisted as much as they could.
