The reader is completely aware that Liesel steals books.... as readers, however, we applaud each time Liesel successfully steals a book, even if we do not agree with her methods. Over the course of novel, Liesel comes to understand what she is doing is wrong.... and that understanding leads to guilt. Her guilt makes her angry, and sometimes it makes her rather mean. It is, none-the-less, a part of the growing up process.
