The lawyer becomes depressed because he is lonely for human companionship. His depression is evident in the fact he begins drinking, is often drunk, and when he isn't drinking..... he is asleep. Later, he studies endlessly..... making himself exhausted and trying to live life through the many genres of text he reads.
