The old man tells Santiago to follow omens. Do you believe that omens exist? Why or why not?

From the very beginning in the novel, omens are introduced as portents (foretells the future) that's why the old man tells Santiago to follow the omen because it will lead him to his treasure. I believe that omens do exist but it can only be recognized by the spiritual people because God wants them to be on the right path.
